Big Kids

September 24, 2010 at 9:57 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

We have had lots going on at our house and I haven’t had as much time to myself so I haven’t been able to blog. The kids are only taking one nap most days and they haven’t always been doing it at the same time. Leah will sleep two or two and half hours, which is awsesome. Jack on the other hand still only sleeps an hour which isn’t quite enough when he is only taking one nap. Needless to say he has been a little cranky this week.  I am hopeful that after another week he will start getting with the program.

We have also packed up all the bottles. Monday I decided that we were going to take them away. I had been worrying about this for a couple of months but it really hasn’t been that big of a deal. At night we give them a little bit of milk in a cup and then put them down. Jack cried himself to sleep the first night but has been fine since then. It was kind of strange… and really nice to pack up the bottles. I can’t believe my kids are big enough to not use bottles.

Sunday we are embarking on our first offical vacation with the kids. Jason and I are taking them to Bennett Springs for a week. My parents go every year and this year we decided to go with them.  Normally Bennett Springs is not my kind of vacation. I am not an outdoorsy person, but it will be nice to get away and have help with the kids for a whole week. I have been packing the last couple of days. It is crazy how much stuff you have to bring with the kids. I’ll take a picture before we leave to show everyone what packing with twins looks like. I’m sure we will have a couple of good stories when we get back.

This week we bought a jungle gym thing from the Nelsons. I had it in the living room with sofa cushions all around it. The kids had a blast. Screaming, yelling, laughing. They learned how to climb up the slide in about two minutes. I had to put it back in the garage for awhile becuase they are pretty fearless which is dangerous but they have a great time whe we get it out.

Here are a few new pictures

Birthday Party

September 21, 2010 at 7:00 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Sunday we had the babies first birthday party. We had 31 people including us, it was just a “small” family party. We had lunch, cake and opened presents. I wasn’t sure how the babies would do. Crowds often make them unsure of things and a little cranky but they did great. especially Jack he was really enjoying the party. He enjoyed the party so much he couldn’t be bothered to stop and take a nap.  Leah was showing off her new skill (putting both hands in the air when you say touchdown) the entire time she was supposed to be eating… she really enjoys being the center of attention. I couldn’t have been happier with the way things turned out and I am so glad that the babies enjoyed themselves.

I’m sure everyone is wondering.. how did they do with the cake? Well, Jack had cake everywhere… hands, face, diaper, legs and even got a bunch on mommy. Leah on the other hand barely touched it. She really didn’t want to get dirty and couldn’t figure out why we were all staring at her. It is so funny how different their personalities are.

It was such a wonderful day. Someone asked me last week if I had cried because they were turning one and I hadn’t…but yesterday as we were giving the kids their bottles and putting them to bed I couldn’t help but cry just a little. I didn’t cry because my babies are one but because I am so happy and feel so lucky. There was a time that I wasn’t sure I would get to be a mommy and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. It is WAY better than I could have ever imagined.

Happy Birthday

Dear Jack and Leah:

Today you are a year old. I can’t belive how fast the year has gone by. It seems like just yesterday that we were putting our hands on Aunt Gina’s Belly and trying to feel you both kick. Daddy and I feel so incredibly blessed that God has trusted us with the important job of being your parents. You are both amazing, beautiful and wonderful kiddos and we cannot imagine our lives without you.

This first year has been filled with challenges and with joy. I am continually amazed by you both and there is nothing better in the world than your sweet smiles, sloppy kisses and hugs. I hope that in years to come I can remember all the little things that make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world. Watching all of your firsts this past year has been wonderful and I am so thankful that I am home with you everyday to teach you, guide you and love you. I think I have learned as much this year as you both have.

Miss Leah, you are a very independent and sometimes sassy girl. You have a hard time waking up in the morning, love showing off your latest skill and will eat almost anything. You were the first one to give kisses, wave and clap and your tiny laugh can make anyone smile.

Jack, you are an adventurous boy but you aren’t afraid to cuddle. You are always the first one awake and the first one to check out a new situation. You were the first one to pull up in the crib and the first one to cruise around the furniture. Your laugh is also amazing I will never get tired of hearing it and I love that you will sit on the couch and let me read to you.

A small part of me is sad that my babies are one but most of me is so excited to see what the next year will bring. I am excited about everything that you will learn and having the opportunity to see you experience even more new things. I am so proud to be your mommy and I feel so blessed.

Happy Birthday and Love,

Ordinary Housewife or Domestic Goddess?

I think I must be channeling June Cleaver today. The babies and I have been extremely busy and productive. The babies slept in until 6:45 which is amazing. I made a double batch of tortilla soup before morning nap, we went to the grocery store, the babies ate an unusually large lunch, I cleaned up the house and made chocolate chip cookies. I did all of that and even had time to take a shower. There are very few days when I feel like I might have my stuff together but today is actually one of them. I even made time to read with the kids, which they actually sat still for 1.5 books and we sang some songs. All of this makes me incredibly happy. What a great way to start the weekend.

My mom and sister are coming in this afternoon and spending the night. Mom and I are headed to the Mothers of Multiples Sale with a friend of mine and Bailey is going to help Jason with the kids. Tomorrow my mom is out of here but Bailey is staying to make cupcakes for the babies party with me. Bailey makes the greatest cupcakes. Even Jason who supposedly doesn’t like cupcakes or icing will eat more than one.

Here are a few pictures I took of the kids today. I was watching the Nate Berkus show yesterday and they had pointers on taking pictures. I think these might be a little better than normal for me.

What’s New

September 16, 2010 at 10:36 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Jack and Leah are officially only drinking one bottle a day. I switched them to a cup for the morning and afternoon. It is going a lot better than I expected. I am still giving them formula for now because they aren’t a year yet but we don’t have much longer.

Jack has decided to eat again which is great. I can tell he has more energy… he is using it to find new ways to get into everything. He will eat taco meat, meat balls, lunch meat, macaroni, black beans and chicken nuggets the list is growing quickly which is nice.

This week I started separating the kids at nap time. I thought that Jack was waking Leah up and keeping her from sleeping very long. When I separated them I discovered that Leah was actually waking Jack up. He has taken a two-hour nap in the morning twice this week. Ms. Leah looks innocent because she is always laying down when I go in the kids room but she is the one that starts it all.

I don’t have much time today. I have lots to do to get ready for the birthday party this weekend.

The Grocery Store trip from…..

September 13, 2010 at 3:33 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

On Mondays Jack and Leah and I always go to the grocery store and do our shopping for the week. The kids normally like going. I put them both in the front of the cart together and they wave and smile at people and check out everything going on. This was not what happened today.

The trip started off like normal I put them both in the cart and started my shopping. They waved at the ladies at the Deli counter and were smiling at all of the older people. Then once we got a couple of aisles in Leah just started screaming. She didn’t appear to have any reason to be screaming so I just ignored it and went on with my shopping. After two aisles of screaming and lots of people looking at me like I was a terrible mother for ignoring her I finally gave in and picked her up and carried her. Jack saw this as a moment of weakness for mommy. I was holding Leah with one hand and pushing the cart with the other hand, which left no hands available for him. So what did Jack do? He turned around in the cart and tried to stand up (while buckled into the cart). Clearly this wasn’t working so I put Leah in the back and held Jack in a sitting position in the front. I was almost done with my shopping so I figured I could make this work. As soon as we got in the frozen food aisle Jack had enough and started screaming, so I took him out and carried him. Leah now saw my moment of weakness and started throwing everything out of the cart. I probably should have picked them both up and walked out of the store but I really didn’t want to have to come back and do this all again. I put them both in the cart and headed up to the checkout stand giving Leah my keys to keep her quiet. While checking out she starts gagging herself with the keys. Jack knocks a gum display off the magazine stand and all I can think is please please ring up these groceries quickly.  Normally there wouldn’t be many people at the grocery store on a monday morning to witness our lovely display but lucky for us there is a Royals game today so there were lots of tailgaters loading up on supplies. I’m pretty sure the group of four college age boys checking out the right of us won’t have children until they are 40 now. We finally got out of the store and both kids screamed the whole time I loaded the car. I’m not sure I’m going to attempt that again for a while. YIKES.

The fun and interesting things didn’t stop there. We got home and Leah climbed on top of the dishwasher door and I somehow managed to get the bathroom door on the downstairs bathroom stuck closed. I’m counting down the minutes until Jason gets home.

Busy Busy

I’m not sure what is going on but the kids have been a handful this week. They have been a little cranky but mostly they have just been busy. They are moving around so fast these days and can crawl across the room in a matter of seconds. If I open the refrigerator I have two babies trying to get out bottles of ketchup and salad dressing. The dishwasher is the same way. If I wear shoes with laces they both grab the laces and I can’t walk. They are also both obsessed with the trash can. Jack throws toys in it and Leah just likes to touch it… gross. I think this is all just a sign of the next few years. Today I pulled Leah’s high chair tray out a little bit and went to grab a wash cloth off the table which is a few inches away and she did this….man am I in trouble. 🙂

I tried to get a few more pictures of the kids in some of their new clothes. I had to take about 10 pictures of Jack just to get him to look at me and Leah was sticking out her tongue all morning so this is the best we could do.

Eating Out… Shopping and New clothes

Tuesday the babies and I headed to Lawrence to get my haircut and spent the night at my parents. My mom and I took Jack and Leah to McDonald’s and actually gave them McDonald’s food for the first time. Not so healthy I know.. but they are supposed to be on a high fat diet. Leah loved it. She ate a bunch of a plan hamburger patty and some pieces of the inside of a chicken nugget. Jack ate some of the chicken nugget pieces and then decided to grab the whole chicken nugget out of Grandma’s hand and shove it in his mouth as fast as he could. Of course we had to take the nugget out and Jack went crazy.. he went in to the ugly cry and I’m pretty sure everyone in the store was looking at us. Then he started drinking Grandma’s diet coke. I’m not sure caffeine is something Jack will ever need. He is become a crazy, squirmy little guy. Tuesday night we had pizza and watched the Killers.. it was cute but a little cheesy. It was nice to have a nice quiet evening with my mom and sister. It will be so much fun when Leah is a little bigger and can join us on our girls nights.

Today we went shopping with Grandma at Legends. It was such a nice day we wanted to do something outside. We attempted to have a nice lunch at Panera but it didn’t go quite as planned. The kids were happy but very busy. They were grabbing our food, our silverware, drinks anything they could touch and they were trying to stand up in the high chairs. I think the other moms there were looking at me and thinking, I’m glad I’m not her today. The kids got a ton of fall clothes. They are going to be the best dressed kids. As soon as we got home I tried a couple of the outfits on Leah. Jack did not want to participate.

Labor Day

September 6, 2010 at 4:11 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 Comments

I thought we were going to have a laid back three-day weekend; however, it turned in to a pretty busy weekend. Friday night Jason and I took the kids out for some Chinese food, went by Whole Foods ( I love that place… too bad it is so expensive) and then went on a long walk before putting the kids to bed.

Saturday we went to the zoo in the morning and Grandma Rosemary came along with us. It was such a nice day we just had to be outside. Apparently everyone else thought the same thing. The zoo was crazy. We didn’t even get to see the new polar bear because there was a huge line to be able to see him. That Nikkita is one popular dude. After the zoo we hung out at Jason’s parents house and then had dinner with them.

Sunday we woke up early thanks to Jack and Leah and went to get a doughnut and to the grocery store. Leah loved her bites of doughnut. As usual Jack refused to try it. We played around the house and went to Taco Via for lunch. Taco Via is okay but not my favorite dinning establishment. Jack thought it was awesome. He ate the meat out of a hard shell taco and ate more than he has in weeks. He was even getting mad that we weren’t feeding him fast enough. Normally that is only something Leah does. It shocked me. After lunch my aunt and cousin came over to visit and then a friend from highschool and her husband came for dinner. My friend is pregnant with identical twin boys. I was worried the kids would be naughty and scare them but they were really good.

Today it has been a slower day which was nice. We hung out at home this morning and then Jack and Leah and I went to lunch with Aunt Bailey and my mom and did a little shopping. Jason is trying something new for dinner (Beef Shortribs) and it smells soo good. I cannot wait to taste it.

What’s Cooking

September 3, 2010 at 9:35 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

This week for our new recipe we tried Southern Living’s Chicken Enchiladas. They were good; however, I would have preferred a little more spice and I think if I make them again I will add some jalapeno to the sauce. I made them in the morning and the put them in the fridge until dinner time which was nice. Anything I can make while the babies nap and cook later makes life much easier.

Last week I made quick and easy Crispy Bean and Cheese Burritos. The recipe is below.I thought they were great and super easy. When I told Jason I was making a dinner without meat his response was, “but we can add some chicken right?” So I ended up putting some left over shredded chicken in the burritos. We will definitely make these again. I didn’t end up getting pictures of either recipe. Dinner time is a little crazy and it just didn’t happen. I’ll try harder next week.

Bean and Cheese Burritos

  • 1  bag (3-1/2 ounces)  boil-in-bag brown rice
  • 1  cup  salsa
  • 1/3  cup  chopped cilantro
  • 1    ripe avocado, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1  tablespoon  lime juice
  • 6    soft taco-size flour tortillas
  • 1  cup  shredded pepper Jack cheese
  • 1  can (15.5 ounces)  black beans, drained and rinsed

Prepare rice according to package directions. Drain rice and place in a bowl. Stir in salsa and cilantro; set aside. In a small bowl, gently stir together avocado pieces with lime juice; set aside.

Place tortillas on work surface and sprinkle 2 tablespoons cheese in center of each. Top cheese with 1/4 cup black beans. Place 1/3 cup rice mixture over beans then divide avocado pieces among tortillas. Fold up like an envelope; repeat with remaining tortillas.

Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat top and bottom of burritos with nonstick cooking spray. Place 3 burritos in skillet, seam-side down; cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly browned and crisp. Turn burritos over and cook another 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining burritos, reducing heat if they get too browned.
