Boys and Girls

January 31, 2011 at 4:39 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Do boys play with “boy” toys and girls play with “girl” toys because that is what we give them? I used to think that this was probably the case but I’m not so sure anymore. At our house we have every kind of toy. Cars, balls, a play kitchen, babies, stuffed animals, you name it we probably have it. Both kids play with everything but Jack is more often found with a car or a ball in his hand than Leah. Leah is more likely to have a baby or play food. Today Leah has been quite the little mommy. We have an old doll of my sisters and Leah has been dragging her around all day. Jack is not allowed to touch it.. Leah tries to bite him every time he does (we have to work on this).  The doll is the same size that Leah was when she was born and it is crazy to see how much she has grown. Jack’s favorite toy today has been plastic balls. He throws them and then screams like he has just done the most amazing thing. It is pretty cute.

Mother’s Day Out?

January 29, 2011 at 1:57 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Ever since the kids were born it seems like there is always a new issue to make a decision on. What car seats to buy, when to turn the car seats around, when to let them eat peanut butter, when to let them have a blanket in their crib. I wish kids came with an instruction manual…man it would make life easier. unfortunately they don’t come with an instruction manual and there isn’t really a right and wrong answer to most of these issues. As parents we just have to read about all sides and decide what we are going to do.

Recently Jason and I have been discussing Mother’s day out. I started looking in to it a little bit and realized that a lot of programs are already having sign ups for next fall. Crazy huh? Several of the programs I found run from 9 to 2ish which just seems like a really long time for the kids to be gone. Also it isn’t exactly cheap to send two kids to mother’s day out. Don’t get me wrong I could definitely use a few hours to get some stuff done but I question if they will really benefit from this or if it is really just day care?

We haven’t made a final decision but I think we are leaning towards skipping mother’s day out and possibly signing them up for another class of some kind. We attend a gymboree class once a week and the kids love it. It has been really fun to seem them progress. Leah has really been loving it recently. She seems to remember the songs and the schedule of activities and gets excited when certain parts of the class start. Jack also enjoys it and is getting pretty brave. He is not afraid of walking away from mommy and will get right in there and play with the big kids. It has been a nice way for us to get out of the house and the kids to get some energy out. We will definitely send the kids to preschool when they are three but are going to think about mother’s day out for a while longer.

Today is the KU vs. K-State game. We are as they say “A House Divided.” Leah is joining my side today and Jack is cheering with Daddy. I taught Leah how to say Hawk…very cute! I gotta work on Jack now.

Our Week

January 28, 2011 at 1:44 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I have been a terrible blogger recently. The kids have been getting in to EVERYTHING and have been go go go from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. I have had to use their nap times for important things like, dishes, laundry and dinner prep.

Jason was out of town this week so the kids and I have been at my parents since Tuesday. It is nice to have some extra hands but being away from home brings some new challenges. Grandma and Grandpa’s house isn’t quite as baby proofed as our house so the kids get into one thing and then move on to the next thing. I finally had to use the “baby pen” around my parents TV so they would quit pushing the buttons. No matter what I did to distract Jack he just couldn’t forget the TV or leave it alone.  Luckily my sister got home early on Wednesday and thursday so we went and ran a few errands to get out of the house.

Jack is getting his molars so he had been a little cranky the last few days. I hope that they come in soon. Leah has decided that she needs a pacifier again. At first I was worried about it, but then I decided that if she would suck on the pacifier she might give up her thumb. I could eventually take away the pacifier but there isn’t much I can do about her sucking her thumb. I have been making her leave it in her bed. Every time she wakes up I tell her that she needs to put her paci down she shakes her head no. This morning she tried to stick it down her shirt. Funny Girl.

Jason is supposed to get home late tonight. I can’t wait to see him. When he is gone it always makes me appreciate how much he really does around the house. After a few days I kinda feel like we are falling apart without him. This morning I heard someone walking down the hallway and I said to Jack “who is that?” Jack’s response was “Daddy.” It was cute..luckily it was Grandma which would probably be Jack’s next favorite person.

I can’t post pictures right now because I don’t know where the cord for the camera is at my parents. I will try to get my sister to find it when she gets home.

16 Months

January 24, 2011 at 2:44 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Jack and Leah turned 16 months old last week. It is safe to say that they are no longer babies anymore and have moved in to the toddler stage. I promise to post some new pictures soon.

Jack

Weight: 21 lbs

Clothing Size 12-18 Months

Favorite Foods: Bannanas, Corn, Pears, Chicken Nuggets, hot dogs, cookies, apple juice, eggs

Jack is starting to talk more and more. He doesn’t say as many things as Leah but he is much easier to understand. Jack says, mama, daddy, ummmma (grandma), cookie, cracker, baby, door, Leah, nigh nigh (good night) shhh (shoes) and tries to say lots of other things. Jack knows that ducks say quack. Jack has moved from walking to running. He is not into his toys as much anymore and his new favorite activitity is walking around exploring. He also likes to play with toy phones. Jack will put his head on the ground in a down ward dog position and wait for you to flip him over so he can do a summersault. He also still loves his tunnel. His favorite book is how to do dinosaurs say goodnight. Jack also puts his hands in the air to show you how big he is when you ask. Jack will give you a hug and will sometimes give kisses. Mommy has only gotten a few..but it does happen.

Leah

Weight: 19.5 lbs

Clothing size: 12-18 mostly some 12 month

Favorite foods: Cheese, chicken nuggets, cookies, crackers, corn, oatmeal,

Leah is offically walking. She is much more cautious than Jack but now walks more than she crawls. She tries to say almost everything we say. She knows where her eyes, hair, belly, toes, nose, mouth and chin are and loves to show anyone who will look. She says mama, daddy, pop (grandpa), eyes, shh (shoe), cookie, juice, cracker, Jack, nigh nigh (good night).  Leah also knows that a duck says quack, a cow says moo and a cat says meow. Leah will put her hands in the air when you ask how big she is. She is also not as in to toys as she once was and prefers to walk around exploring. She also likes to talk on the phone and normally calls Jack when she does. Leah is a little girl who knows what she wants and has started biting if need be to get her way.. Poor Jack. She loves singing and her favorite book is How do dinosaurs say goodnight followed closely by How Big is Baby. Leah loves to give kisses and blow kisses and will sometimes hug.

Winter Activities for Toddlers Part 2

January 19, 2011 at 2:19 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

It’s still cold. We are still spending all of our time inside and the kids are still bored. Yesterday I got brave and decided to let the kids play in a large bucket of soapy water (mostly bubbles). It made a pretty big mess but the kids had a blast. I wish I knew how to put videos on here becuase Leah kept cracking up while they were playing. It was almost like she couldn’t believe that I was letting her make a mess. Jack was a little on the quiet side but still enjoyed himself. The favorite utensils were wooden spoons and silicone brushes.

Our day went down hill after that yesterday. Jack was having some tummy trouble and nap times didn’t go well. When Jason got home he kindly gave me a few minutes to go upstairs and have a little break. I’m sure I don’t tell him enough but he is a very good husband and daddy.

Inside activities for Toddlers

January 14, 2011 at 1:54 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

It has been nasty out. It has been cold and snowy and just plain gross. That means the kids and I have been spending a lot of time inside. We really have only gone out a handful of times in the last two weeks. The kids are starting to get stir crazy. They are getting bored, which makes them really whinny. So I did what any mom would do. I googled what to do with Toddlers. One of the ideas that came up was homemade play dough. It wasn’t hard to make so I thought we would give it a shot. Jack loved it. He took his little plastic knife and fork and cut it up and smooshed it between his little hands. He was very serious about the whole thing. Leah on the other hand thought it was gross. She did want her hand it in at all. She would poke it with a fork but that was about it. After about two seconds she started saying “out” and repeated it again and again until I finally got her down.  It is funny how different the kids are. Here are a couple of pictures with the kids and their play dough. I also put the recipe below. If anyone else has any new ideas for inside activities let me know.

Playdough
1 Cup Flour
1/2 cup Salt
1 Cup Water
2 Tablespoons Oil
2 Tablespoons Cream of Tarter.
Instructions.
Mix Together Flour, salt and oil and slowly add water. Cook over low heat stirring occasionally until the dough becomes stiff. Set ball of dough on water paper and let cool. Knead with your hands until the dough is the correct consistancy.

Good News…I think

January 6, 2011 at 2:54 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 3 Comments

This blog is supposed to be about Jack and Leah but today I’m going to make it a little bit about me. I have an auto-immune diseas called Takyasu’s Arteritis. It is because of this disease that I wasn’t able to carry Jack and Leah. My aorta is wider than it should be and the doctors were worried that the extra stress a baby would put on me would cause problems.

As part of my treatment I get a medicine called Remicade through an IV every eight weeks. I found out yesterday that my doctor thinks I may be in remission and I am going to stop getting the medicine and see what happens. If all goes according to plan everything will remain the same.  There is always a chance that I am not having any problems because the medicine is working and my sympoms will return…but we are going to keep our fingers crossed and pray that this isn’t the case. This is one of those things that makes me excited but at the same time nervous. It was ten years ago that my whole crazy journey with this disease started. Ten years ago I had no idea how it was all going to turn out. I remember being in the hospital and wondering if I would be able to go back to a “normal” life. I feel so blessed and hope that this disease is really gone for good.

I will still have to take medicine to control my blood pressure and thin my blood, but that is something I will have to do my whole life. My doctors will also continue to moniter my heart and make sure that everything stays the same. At some point I will probably need an aortic valve replacement in my future but I am praying that it won’t be for many many years.

New Years Resolutions

January 3, 2011 at 11:01 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I have been thinking about my New Years resolutions a lot recently. I don’t think I made any last year. Jason and I were still trying to figure out how to cope with little to no sleep and take care of two babies. Here is my list for this year.

* Drink less Diet Coke- I drink entirely too many Diet Cokes a day. It is bad for your bones and not a good example for the kids. I started this today and I already have a headache.

*Find a Church that Jason and I both like and become invoved.

*Spend more time with family and friends.

*Stick to our Budget.

*Have Date Nights on a regular basis.

Here are a few other things I want to accomplish. Not really resolutions just a to do list. I thought putting it on the blog might make me more likely to accomplish them.

* Take a cooking class.

* Sign the babies up for swimming lessons.

* Finally clean out the basement.

*Go to a baseball game.

* Read more.

* Go to a wine tasting.

* Get a bound copy of the blog as a memory book for the babies.
