Couples Shower

February 21, 2011 at 4:55 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

It was a busy weekend…soo busy that I couldn’t write about it all in one post so I thought I would start with the couples shower. Saturday night my friend Lindsey and I hosted a shower for our good friend Ashley and her finance Erik. It was a stock the bar couples shower and was a lot of fun. It was soo nice to have an evening without the kids and have some grown up time.

I really enjoy party planning and entertaining and I am always looking online for ideas…so I thought I would share a few of our ideas from this shower. We made “bar food” for the party. The menu included roast beef sliders with blue cheese mayo, spinach and artichoke dip, chicken fingers, chicken wings, veggies and dip and lavosh with cheese. We had a chocolate fountain with fruit, brownies and some other good stuff to dip. For decorations I made chalk board wine bottles. They turned out soo cute. I will definitely be using these in the future.

This is going to be a random post. I have all kinds of things floating in my head. It has been a busy busy week. It has been nice outside so the kids and I have had a chance to get out of the house more and even play outside several days or take a walk. They love being outside and will generally throw a little fit when it is time to come inside.

Jack has decided he doesn’t want to nap this week…ugh. This is part of the reason I haven’t blogged much. I finally decided today that he needed to stay in his room for at least 30 minutes even if he didn’t sleep. The no nap thing is starting to make me crazy. It is my only time of the day to have some time to myself.  Jack has also been waking up at least once every night for the past couple of weeks and getting up about 30 minutes to an hour earlier every morning  than he was.  Jason and I take turns taking him down stairs to the guest room in the middle of the night and lay him back down in the pack and play. He always goes right back to sleep..but when he wakes up he is really mad so we can’t just let him cry it out. I hope he stops doing this soon I always have a hard time falling back to sleep and I am starting to get really tired. This coupled with the lack of nap time isn’t good. I’m not really sure what to do with him.

This weekend the kids are going to Grandma and Grandpas becuase Jason and I have a couple of activities. Friday night I think we are going to have a little date night. Saturday morning I am getting together with a group to “cook and freeze”. We will assemble six meals for each of us to take home. Hopefully this will help make dinner time easier. Most people with kids know that the 5 o’clock hour is the betwiching hour for kids. Even if they have been good all day the moment you start to make dinner they go crazy. They hang on my legs and cry. Everyday between 4:30 and 5:30 is soo stressful. I feel like I have a hundred things to do and then I have two kids hanging off of me while I do them so I can’t move very fast. I have tried all sorts of different things to try and make this go smoother but it is just crazy. Okay I got off topic. Saturday evening I am hosting a couples shower with my friend Lindsey for our good friend Ashley. I have been shopping and preparing for both of these events this week. I will post more about them after the weekend. Hopefully I will have some fun pictures too.

On a good note one of my good friends from college, Hillary and her husband welcomed a baby girl to the world yesterday! We are soo excited for them and can’t wait to meet baby Katie.

Happy Valentines Day

February 14, 2011 at 2:14 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

We sent these pictures to the Grandparents and a couple of other people for Valentines Day.

We celebrated Valentines Day at our house on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and we went out as a family and ran some errands. We had a quick lunch at On The Border and then did a little window shopping. We stopped by target on the way home to get a couple of essentials and the kids fell asleep in the car so Jason and I decided to drive around for awhile so they got a good amount of sleep. When we came home we brought the kids plastic slide inside and let them play for awhile. They were chasing each other and giggling and having the best time. Jason made one of my favorite dinners (Penne Pasta with vodka cream sauce, prosuitto and mushrooms) and we ate while the kids watched Barney. This Valentines celebrating was soo different from years past. No fancy dinner or gifts…just a quiet day as a family. I honestly could not have asked for more. I hope everyone is having a great Valentines Day.

Pictures for Oma and Pop

February 12, 2011 at 10:44 am | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Oma and Pop (Grandma Rhonda and Grandpa Kirk) are in sunny Florida right now, so we are posting some pictures for them.

There isn’t much new to report here. We had a quiet friday evening at home. Aunt Melanie joined us for dinner. The kids always enjoy seeing her and Jason and I enjoyed catching  with her. I was trying to make dinner before Jason got home yesterday and Jack somehow managed to pull the bag of crackers off the shelf and poor them everywhere. It was hard to be mad because he was SOO proud of himself.

Today we are off to run some errands and maybe have lunch. Jason and I decided to celebrate valentines day tonight because I have a meeting on monday night. We are making penne pasta with vodka cream sauce and we are going to pick up some desserts from Dean and Deluca. My favorite.

5 Things 16 Month Olds Love

February 11, 2011 at 9:34 am | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Here are five things that we are loving right now.

1. Mickey and Minnie Mouse Jammies from Wal-Mart. My mom bought these for $5 I think. The girl ones are red and the boy ones are blue…they are soo cute and made as well as all of our other jammies. (Jack decided he didn’t want to be a model so he isn’t a part of the picture.)

2. We found a six pack of plastic balls at Wal-Mart for $2. Jack has had soo much fun with them. He played with them for almost a half an hour yesterday, which is an eternity in 17 month old-time. I never knew you could have soo much fun for $2.

3. Baby Einstein: First Words Book. Aunt Cassie and Uncle Jerome gave the kids this for Christmas. Both kids love looking at it and finding things. Leah also loves pointing to everything so I will tell her what it is. We are often fighting over this book.

4. B. Doctor Medical Kit from Target.  Aunt Bailey gave this to the kids for christmas and they LOVE it. It comes with tweezers, sizzors, syringes, a stethoscope.. and some other things. They love all the little pieces and get so excited when I get it out. It is also a big hit when the neighbors come over to play.

5. Chipotle’s new kids meals. We didn’t have anything planned for dinner last night and ended up going by Chipotle. Jason and I have always loved Chipotle but the fact that they have kids meals makes it even better. We got the kids a Taco Kit meal with Rice, black beans, Chicken, flour shells and cheese. Jack loves the black beans..I wish I had a picture from yesterday they were all over his face. Leah will eat any of it. I like that it gives us an option to eat out without giving them fried and fatty food. Plus Chipotle uses as much organic or local food as the can. The meal comes with a drink (either 100% apple juice or organic milk) and a small bad of chips. The kids meals are only in select locations now but will hopefully be in all locations soon. I listed the menu that our store had below.

  1. Small Cheese Quesadilla.  With a side of rice and beans.  $2.95.
  2. Small Meat & Cheese Quesadilla.  With a side of rice and beans.  $3.50.
  3. Single Taco.  Soft or crispy shell, and a choice of any three items (one meat or guacamole) and a side of rice.  $3.50.
  4. Taco Kit.  Choose any three ingredients (one meat or guacamole) and two soft or crispy shells.  Served on a tray for easy building.  $3.95.

The kids had a great day today. We went to a Mother’s of Preschoolers (MOPS) meeting with a friend of a friend. We all had fun I and I think it will be something that we attend on a regular basis. I wanted to post a few pictures of some funny things that have happend recently while the kids were playing.

Friday night when my mom was here I was trying some clothes on Leah and she picked out a pretty funny collection of things to wear. We didn’t take any pictures friday so I decided  to recreate the outfit last night. She loved it just as much the second day. The picture of Jack with food all over his face is Tacos. He had it everywhere. Good thing it is bath night. The picture of Jack by the kitchen cabinent is showing Jack “asking” for cookies. He figured out where I keep them and is now my own little cookie monster.

Some Pictures

I wanted to post some recent pictures of the kids. We haven’t really been up to much recently. I was sick last Thursday and Friday. Jason stayed home all day on Thursday and took care of the kids and I ended up calling him about 10 on friday and said “please come home I feel terrible.” Luckily he stepped in and took care of the kids, went to the store and even cooked dinner. I don’ t know what I would do without him.

This weekend my mom came and spent the night friday night and Jason spent the evening smoking cigars with my dad and having a little guy time after his two days as Mr. Mom. The kids enjoyed having Grandma at their house and were showing off big time.

Jack’s new favorite thing is to close doors. He will close any cabinet or door left open and is very proud of himself. It actually comes in handy. Anyone who knows me well knows I have a tendency to leave doors open. I think I made my roommates in college crazy always leaving the kitchen cabinets open. Jack has also been helping mommy by throwing things away. About 75% of the time I actually want whatever it is thrown away but the rest of the time I have to dig through the trash to pull out toys, cups or whatever else he has thrown in there. Leah may or may not have a black eye after her nap. We went to Hobby Lobby this morning and Leah was riding in the back of the cart. The kids were fighting over Mommys keys and she hit her face on the side of the cart. It doesn’t look great and there was a LOT of crying. I’m hoping it goes down while she naps. Poor girl.

Things I have learned from being a mom…

February 2, 2011 at 2:31 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Things I have learned from being a mom…..

*You don’t have to shower everyday… while nice, it is not a requirement.

*It is okay to eat frozen pizza for frozen lasagna for can even say you cooked because after all you did put it in the oven.

*Laundry is no longer a once a week job.

*The babies are really in charge not the parents.

*Those diaper pails that are supposed to keep your house from smelling like diapers quits working when your kids start eating real food.

*It is okay to cry sometimes…it normally makes you feel better.

*Whoever said sleep when your baby sleeps did not have twins.

* When people say their kids sleep all night they mean that they have slept all night…not that they sleep all night every night. At 16 months or even two kids have weeks where they wake up at crazy times.

*It is okay if your kids watch TV sometimes…Barney really is your friend.

*Those Moms that look all cute at the mall and have make up on and their hair done are either having a particularily good day or they have help. Most people with small children don’t look like that.

*Once you become a mom your car is going to get gross. It is almost impossible to keep it totally clean..after all it is basically a giant diaper bag on wheels.

* Being a mom takes more patients that you can possibly imagine.

*There really is nothing better than a “kiss” from your little one, even if it resembles a lick.

*At some point you are going to have every bodily fluid possible on you.. and it really won’t gross you out as much as you might think.

*Putting a child to bed later does not mean that he or she will sleep later.

*Hearing “mama” really is the greatest thing in the world.

*Side Note. I titled my post about the the KU vs. K-State game “boarder wars”… I realize KU and K-State are both in Kansas and Boarder is spelled border. I apparently I was having a blonde moment, or perhaps a very tired mommy moment. I’m sure there are a few people who got a good laugh out of this. Please excuse my craziness.

Macaroni and Cheese

February 2, 2011 at 2:22 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I am always looking for fast and easy meals that we can throw together with stuff that we already have around the house.  A couple of weeks ago I was going out for dinner with a friend and decided that I wanted to make Jason something better than frozen pizza for dinner. I found Paula Dean’s recipe for Macaroni and Cheese online and made a couple of tweaks to it. It turned out great! Jason loved it and it almost made me wish I was staying home for dinner. Below I have listed my updated version of the recipe.

Creamy Mac and Cheese

4 Cups cooked elbow macaroni

2 1/4 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese

3 eggs beaten

1/2 cup sour cream

4 Tablespoons Butter

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup 2% milk

Dash of Tobasco Sauce

4-5 slices of cooked bacon crumbled

1. Stir together eggs, sour cream, tobasco sauce, milk, salt and bacon.

2. Add butter cut in chunks.

3. Add in cooked macaroni and cheese

4. Place in a casserole dish and bake at 350 for 45 min to 1 hour
