Weekend Craziness

July 25, 2011 at 1:50 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

It seems like I am having less and less time to blog the older the kids get. I think a lot of the problem right now is that I am spending nap time cleaning trying to keep our house ready in case we get a call for a showing. We have had four showings so far..nothing serious.

As usual this past weekend was pretty busy and somewhat chaotic…I think that is just our life these days. Thursday the kids and I went to Lawrence and spent the night. Friday during the day my sister and I let the kids swim in the backyard and did some errands. Jason and I had haircuts that evening. Recently Leah has become quite a ham and she decided that she would dance for everyone while I got my haircut. It was pretty funny. There were probably 12 people standing around some of them with their hair in foil or with wet hair while Leah did the cha cha slide and her ballet moves. So far I have taught her to do Passe, Plie, Tondu and Arabasque. She loves it, which I have to admit makes me a very proud mama. I have got to get her on video soon. After haircuts we went to get Mexican food with my family and my Aunt Elizabeth. The kids were very well behaved, which was nice. Then we all loaded up and headed to my Grandparents house to have some ice cream cake and celebrate my Grandpas birthday. (There are a few pictures below of this). The kids did well and even got to stay up past bedtime.

Saturday Jason and I snuck out to get breakfast and took Jack with us. Before the kids came we often ate breakfast out on the weekends and it is something Jason and I both love doing. Jack only ate Bacon for breakfast. He ate his bacon, some of daddys bacon and some of my bacon. I think he said Bacon about 40 times during the course of breakfast. We were going to walk around down town and let Jack get some energy out but he decided he would not hold my hand so we left. He is quite a stubborn little guy when he wants to be. Saturday afternoon we headed over to Aunt Gina and Uncle Tony’s house for some of Tony’s famous ribs. The kids had a blast running around. Leah danced and Jack talked up a storm.

Sunday I am happy to say was uneventful. We ran some errands ate lunch out and then just hung out at home and grilled out. It was a nice ending to a busy weekend.

Tomorrow I am headed to Florida for four and half days with my good friend Amber. I am beyond excited. I haven’t taken a real girls trip since the kids and I am really looking forward to some down time. I am a little nervous about what will be going on at home..but I’m sure it will all be fine. My mom is taking the kids one day, my Aunt and Cousin will have them another day, My friend Libby will have them a half day and Jason is doing  a day and a half on his own. I’m sure the kids will have a blast getting to be with someone different that they love everyday.

I havne’t blogged for awhile but I have lots of good reasons. I also haven’t taken any pictures of the kids for awhile…no good reasons there. I’m just going to do a random bullet point blog to record some of the things going on. I promise to post pictures soon.

* Aunt Bailey came to stay with us for a couple of days last week. We enjoyed having her and the kids were sad when aunt “Bay-Wee” left.

* Chief our dog had surgery last friday to remove a tumor from his behind. He is doing much better now but still taking medicine and wearing a cone.

* We put our house on the market friday. Trying to get the house clean with two almost two year olds is a challenging task to say the least. We have had two showings so far. I hope it sells fast or I may loose my mind.

*The kids spent last weekend with Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Bailey. Jack has been talking much more so I get bits and pieces of what they did. The funniest line so far has been “Grandpa Kirk Jelly Bean pants.” Apparently Grandpa was carrying jelly beans in his pocket this weekend for Jack and Leah. I have also heard a lot about “Uncle Ste Ste Balls.” Which I can only assume means that Uncle Stephen played with all the plastic balls with Jack at Grandma and Grandpas but who knows for sure.

* Jack is continuing to talk up a storm. He almost always says two works at a time now…sometimes more. His most commonly used phrase the past few days has been “Colors please mama.” but when he says colors it sounds like quarters. All he wants to do since this weeked is get out the crayons and coloring books. Leah likes to peel the labels of the crayons and throw them.

* Leah isn’t talking as much but is obviously jealous of the attention Jack is getting from it. He has been a little grumpy lately and wanting mommy to hold her all the time. Her new favorite activity is playing with her new baby which we have named Amy.

* Jack has decided he no longer needs a nap and hasn’t napped in a week. Soo sad for mommy.

Better get back to work.

A few of our Favorite Things

July 8, 2011 at 2:14 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I haven’t done a post about our favorite things for awhile and things change fast around here these days. Here are five things we are loving right now.

1. Tide Stain Release Free In Wash Booster. The kids are a mess when they eat these days and they are also obsessed with salsa and ketchup and I was starting to feel like we were ruining everything they were wearing. I went to target and bought three or four differnet stain removers in an attempt to remove ketchup from serveral items. This stuff works great..and it is easy to use which is just what I need. It also comes in dye free which is good becaue I have to get dye and perfume free stuff to use on Leah’s clothes.

2. Sugar Booger Bibs. For the most part the kids don’t wear bibs any more but when we got out I do put them in bibs to attempt to save their clothes. These are the only bibs I have found that they can’t get off. They have a snap, they are washable and they are cute!! I highly recommend them.

3. Mega Blocks. The kids love these..they are simple but everytime I get them out they get super excited.

4. Stawberry Watermelon Koolaid-I found this at price chopper and it doens’t have any dye in it. I make it with half the sugar and it doesn’t make a mess. The kids get so excited when I make it for them as a treat. I don’t know why they don’t make all the flavors available without the dye.

5. Keens. Jack got the pair he has as hand-me-downs and we LOVE them. I will definetly be buying more. They are really nice at the pool because he can wear them and I don’t have to worry about him slipping or burning his feet. They also have rubber toes which keeps them looking nice. Leah loves to put them on ..I need to get her a pink pair.

Fix and Freeze-Chicken and Bows

July 8, 2011 at 12:50 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

This is the first of the fix and freeze meals that we have tried from our third round of cooking. Jason and Leah liked it a lot. Jack and I were a little on the fence. However, it was fast, cheap and the clean up was easy…which makes it a win in my book.

Chicken and Bows

1 package (16oz) Bow tie pasta

2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast cut into strips

1 Cup chopped sweet red pepper

1/4 cup Butter, cubed

2 cans (10 3/4 oz each) condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted

2 cups frozen peas

1 1/2 cups milk

1 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

2/3 Cup grated parmesean cheese

Directions:

Cook pasta according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large Dutch oven, cook chicken and red bell pepper in butter over medium heat for 5-6 min or until chicken juices run clear.

Stir in the soup, peas, milk, garlic powder salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered for 1-2 minutes or until heated through. Stirl in Parmesean Cheese. Drain pasta; add to chicken mixutre and toss to coat. Cool and transer to two 8 x 8 inch pans and freeze.

To cook–Thaw for 24 hours. Bake at 350 for 30 minor until golden and bubbly.

Then and Now

July 7, 2011 at 2:13 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

The kids and I had a great morning. We went to crown center and checked out the rain forrest exhibit. If you are looking for somethig to do with your kids it is a nice free activity.

On my way home I was thinking about how much I have enjoyed this summer so far. I feel so fortunate to be able to stay at home with my babies. They are growing up quickly and I get to be there for all the moments big and small. I know that staying at home isn’t for everyone and there are days that I think I might lose my mind but most days I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

I was also thinking about how much the babies have changed since last year. I was looking at pictures and it is hard to believe that last year they were just little babies and this year they are toddlers. Jack has been talking like crazy the past few days. He has been putting words together..normally just two but sometimes three. Yesterday he came up to me and said “mama play legos.” His other new things is to say bye to things: bye bye dirt (when you vacum), bye bye potty (when flush the toliet), Bye bye Lunch (when I take his plate). Leah isn’t talking quite as much but her new thing is to constantly want to change her clothes and shoes. I have got to get this girl some dress up stuff soon.

The pictures below are from this year and last year..what a difference a year makes!

Day in the Life-Tuesday

July 6, 2011 at 1:36 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I wanted to do one last day in the life post becuase the days I did last week were kind of crazy. Yesterday was a more typical day for us.

6:30-Jack wakes up. I get the kids take them downstairs, change diapers and make breakfast (frozen waffles and fruit).  I unload the dishwasher and pack Jason’s lunch while everyone eats.

7-Jason leaves for work. I check my email, read some blogs and watch tv with the kids.

8am-I get dressed and get the kids dressed. I attempt to pick up the house, do a couple of loads of laundry and try to get organized from the weekend.

9:30am-The kids and I head to a friends house to go walk and go to the park.

11:30am-We get back from the walk/park and I make lunch. We have tons of leftovers from the weekend so I make a hodge podge of stuff..hotdogs, macaroni, fruit, leftover cajun pasta.

12pm-The kids and I sti down to read  a little and play before nap time.

12:45pm-Change diapers and lay the kids down for naps. I am exhausted and decide to rest while the kids are napping.

2pm-Jack wakes up and he and I snuggle on the couch and watch fireman sam.

2:45-Leah wakes up and I change the kids diapers and make them a snack. We take our snack outside and I quickly realize that trail mix with chocolate chips may have been a mistake. Jack is instantly covered in chocolate..but he is happy.

3:30-Head inside pick up the house again…I don’t know how it gets so messy so fast.

4:15-Start dinner. We had chicken fried rice..I found the recipe on Love From Texas. It was a big hit. I posted what I did below. I made a few small changes but it was pretty much exactly what the recipe says.

5:pm-Jason gets home and we eat dinner.

5:40pm-Dinnerr is all cleaned up and we head back to the park just to get out of the house for awhile.

6:15 pm-Back from the park. We give the kids baths, put pj’s on, and read stories.

7pm-Bedtime. Jason and put in Mad Men to watch the final episode of Season 2. I cannot get enough of this show.

9pm-I attempt to watch Teen mom but fall asleep after about 10 min.

Chicken Fried Rice

1lb skinless boneless chicken breasts

4c brown rice, cooked

frozen stir fry veggies
3 eggs

soy  sauce

Directions:
1. Cut chicken in to thin slices and marinate in teriyaki sauce and minced garlic. I let mine sit in the fridge for 6 hours.

2. Cook chicken and set aside.

3. Cook stir fry veggies in large skillet in hot oil. The mix I used had peas, carrotts, mushrooms, onion and water chestnuts.

4. Combine chicken and cooked rice in skillet with veggies. In a separate small pan, scramble eggs until just done. Throw in to larger skillet.

4. Stir fried rice and season with soy sauce. Cook on low heat for about 10 minutes.

Fourth of July

July 6, 2011 at 1:22 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

We had a crazy fourth of July weekend and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it. Friday night the kids and I hung out with my mom and sister. Saturday I helped host a shower for my niece then dinner at home and movies on the couch with my hubby. Sunday we ran some errands, had lunch as a family and then headed to Jason’s families annual 3rd of July party. We actually stayed until 9:30…a first since the kids have been here. We had the kids jammies on and were all ready to leave but then people started dancing and our little Leah was a Dancing Queen. She was right out there with all the big girls and having the time of her life. My brother got a little video..I will have to see there is a way we can get it on the blog some how. Jack enjoyed running around in the empty fields, the tractor rides and trying to be a big guy. Monday my sister and I took the kids for a quick zoo trip before having my family over for a bbq. The kids were very well behaved the whole weekend and it was great to spend soo much time with our families. I wish I had been better at taking pictures but we forgot. Here are a couple.

Day in the Life-Friday

July 2, 2011 at 8:41 am | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

6:30 am-Wake up call. We get thirty extra minutes today. I was exhuasted and laid in bed until 6:45.

6:45 am-Get up take the kids down stairs, change diapers, make breakfast (cinnamon rolls and strawberries) unload the dishwasher.

7:30 am-Jason Leaves. I watch a little tv with the kids and check emial.

7:45 am-Decorate cupcakes for shower tomorrow. I get all 50 done and then start baking the taco salad shells…only 35 of these to do.

8:45-still working on cupcake and taco salad situation. The kitchen is a disaster. I take several breaks to change yucky diapers. The kids are upset I am not playing with them and I am starting to think I am crazy.

10: 15-finally finish up kitchen projects and chop veggies for tongihts dinner. Get the kitchen cleaned up. I dress the kids and thrown on some clothes.

10:45-Run to HyVee to a couple of items I forgot for tonights Cajun chicken pasta and get chinese food for the kids and I for lunch.

11:30-Get home and eat lunch outside to avoid picking up a thousand pieces of rice of the floor. When the kids are done eating we play outside for a bit.

12- Come inside change diapers and put the kids down for a nap.

12:30-Write a little on the blog, pay some bills, catch up with some paperwork.

12:45-Find out we have a boil order on our water..I am so grateful I let the kids have juice boxes for lunch. After reading what to do for a boil order I decide we should not cook dinner here and decide we will eat out instead. I also realize I cannot let the kids take a bath or play in the sprinkler today because Leah always drinks the water. She just can’t help herself.

3:00-Jason gets home. The kids are still asleep..its a miracle. I run to the store along with everyone else in johnson county to buy ice and water. My Dad calls and Jason decides he is going to Lawrence to spend the night so he can help move dirt in the morning. We organize a prisoner exchange*.

3:45-The kids are awake and Jason leaves for Lawrence.

4:45-Grandma and Aunt Bailey arrive. We head to Margaritas for dinner and run by the gap on the way home.

6:45-Get home and get the kids ready for bed.

7pm-Kids in bed. Cocktail time for me and Grandma.

10pm-Bedtime for everyone.

*Prisoner Exchange=Jason leaves and Grandma arrives to take his place.

Sorry I didn’t take any pictures today..it slipped my mind.

Day in the Life–Thursday

July 1, 2011 at 1:01 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Before I write about Thursday I should tell you that all weeks are not as crazy as this week. Although, this summer it has felt like everyday has been a crazy adventure..fun but crazy.

6 am- Jack and Leah wake up just like normal. I take them downstairs and do the normal routine, dipers, breakfast and unloading the dishwasher. I opt not to actually cook breakfast today and feed the kids breakfast bars and fruit.

7am-Jason leaves for work. I watch a few minutes of The Cat and the Hat with the kids check my email and read some blogs.

7:30 am-I clean up the kitchen, dress the kids, and try to tidy up the rest of the house.

8 am- I let the kids watch some dinosaur train in their pack and plays while I shower. I never got around to showering yesterday so this is a must!

8:45 am-The kids and I head to the grocery store to pick up a few things for the shower I am helping to host Saturday and a last minute item for my fix and freeze group. I start thinking about everything we have to do today and decide I need a fountain diet coke on the way home.

9:30 am- Get home and unload groceries. Feed the kids a few cheerios for a snack. Make a batch of Strawberry icing for Saturday. Clean the kitchen again.

10:15am-Get out Legos and play with the kids. Jack and Leah make towers and take turns knocking them down.

11 am-Lexi and Libby come to our house and we all head to McDonalds for Lunch. The McDonalds by our house only has two high chairs so Leah gets to sit in the booth with me, she is thrilled.  The kids all ate a ton of lunch and attracted quite a bit of attention. Mostly because Lexi was saying hi to everyone and Jack was waving to everyone.

11:45 am-Libby and I take the kids to a park. We are the only ones there and the kids run around and have a ton of fun.

12:45 pm- Head back to our house and attempt to get the kids to take a nap so Libby and I can cook 8 lbs of chicken for tonights fix and freeze. Jack goes right to sleep. Lexi and Leah are in the same room and can’t stop saying each others names and laughing. Libby and I listen for awhile..it was soo cute. We finally give up and Libby takes Lexi home.

1:45 pm-I start shredding the chicken. Jack wakes up. I hold him while I finish and then he and I watch some Fresh Beat Band and have a snack (Raisins and Goldfish).

2:30 pm-Leah wakes up and has a snack.

2:45 pm-I take the kids outside and let them have popsicles and play in the sprinkler. They had a blast!  We are really soaking up summer today. Moments like this make me so happy that I get to stay at home with the kids.

3:30 pm-Come inside and give the kids a bath because I will be gone tonight.

4:45 pm-Jason gets home. We decide to forgo the plan of eating sandwiches for dinner and opt to eat at Runza using a coupon we had instead.

5:30 pm-Libby comes to pick me up and I head to fix and freeze. Jason is in charge of the kids for the rest of the evening.

8:30 pm-Home from from fix and freeze. I have eight  food items with me. This time we made meatloaf, chicken and bows, hamburger noodle bake, broccoli rice casserole, dill porkchops, chicken divan, apple crisp and chili burgers. Jason and I watch TV until bed. He is a good sport and lets me watch the Real Housewives of New York.

10 pm- Bedtime.
