Number Two

When Gina got pregnant I read all kinds of books about babies and pregnancy. One of my favorite books was Baby 411, but I was surprised when I started looking through this book and found an entire chapter devoted to Poop. I didn’t read the chapter… I thought I knew everything there was to know. They eat, they poop and you change their diapers. After the twins got here I soon learned that poop would become a common topic of conversation. It was something I worried about… how much is too much? Is this color normal? Is this texture normal? What do we do if we don’t see it for a while. Needless to say I have since read the entire chapter on poop.

Last night, I was making the babies bottles in the middle of the night when I heard a noise that sounded like it came from a grown man. Surely, my sweet little babies would not make a noise that nasty…but they were the only other ones in the room. I walked over and checked on them and they were both quietly sleeping. So, I did what any mom would do. I picked them up and smelled their butts. Nothing. So I moved on to my next tactic.. I tried to peek in the diaper. Jack was all clear, but somehow when I did this too Leah I ended up with finger covered in poop. Normally I would have gone running to the bathroom, but this time I wiped it off changed Leah’s diaper and then washed my hands.  I know that motherhood changes you, but I didn’t expect this. In the movie Baby Momma there is a scene where a little kid has brown all over his hands. His mom says Poop or Chocolate and then proceeds to lick the child’s hands. I figure as long as I am only smelling it we are okay.

In other news, our doctors appointment went well. Jack now weighs 5 lb 9 oz and Leah weighs 5 lb 2 oz. They got a good report; however, we have to put them in their own beds now. It makes me a little sad to separate them, but there are increased risks of SIDS in twins who sleep together. The doctor also encouraged us to quit sleeping in their room. We took her advice and the babies slept in their separate cribs last night and we slept in our own room. It went better than expected..but it is still hard to have them so far away. Hopefully every night will get easier.

I’m a Survivor : )

We are surviving with two babies at home. We both seem to be learning to trust that they are okay when they are sleeping.. or maybe we are finally becoming so tired that we just can’t stay awake watching them all night. They seem to be pretty good sleepers… so far anyway.

Jack and Leah are starting to be awake a little more. It has been fun watching them lay next to each other as they squirm around. They seem to be much calmer when they are together. Every time we lay them next to each other they end up sucking on each others hands. It is so cute. They have also started to stretch out more. Their little legs look so skinny when they do that.

We have a doctors appointment this morning. It will be our first family outing. I wasn’t sure how long it would take us to get ready, so I started really early and surprisingly we are ready and waiting to leave. How many times will that actually happen with two babies?

Here are some new pictures. I better get going so we aren’t late to the doctor.

All Together In One Place

It has been a busy couple of days and the lack of sleep is starting to set in. Friday night my Dad and sister came to visit Jack for the first time, and my parents made us a steak dinner. It was such a great evening. Spending time with family, eating good food, listening to music and just hanging out. It was perfect.. except we were missing our sweet baby Leah.

Saturday night went better than our first two nights at home and Jason and I are both a bit more rested. My mom took the 5 am feeding and the 8 am feeding and let us both sleep in, which was great!! It is great to have her here. She has been cooking, doing laundry and helping with the babies. I don’t know what we would do without her.

Then today… LEAH CAME HOME!!! We took Jack with us to the hospital so that we could all come home together. It has been wonderful having them both at home. Aunt Gina and Grandma Rosemary came to visit. I am tired, but this is still one of the best days ever. Jason and I have both been smiling all day knowing that we are finally all together in one place.

They weighed Leah before she left the hospital and she is now 5 lb 2 oz. They are growing soo fast. We even have a few preemie outfits that they have grown out of and several hats that are too small.

Here are some new pictures.

Jack’s First Day at Home

We survived our first night home with Jack. Jack did great; however, Jason and I had a hard time not getting up every time he made a sound. Hopefully this will get better as we get the hang of things. My mom came last night and is going to stay with us for two weeks. We are very glad that she is here, she has been a big help already and I know that she is enjoying her time with baby Jack.

Leah is still doing well. It looks like she may come home on Sunday if things continue to go well. Jason and I have been taking turns going up to the hospital to feed her. We can’t wait for her to be home so we can all be together.

We got the house all organized last night. We spent a long time washing and sanitizing bottles. It took up the whole kitchen, it was kind of funny. I’m going to keep this short for now… I’m headed back to the hospital to feed Leah. Here are a few new pics.

Bittersweet

We spent the night at the hospital last night with Jack. The night was good… Jack did great. I had a hard time sleeping. I spent most of the night watching Jack breathe. It was the first time he didn’t have his monitors on for more than a few minutes and it was making me nervous. I had to keep reminding myself the doctor wouldn’t let him go home if he wasn’t ready.

Leah had an awesome night last night. She has now taken all of her feedings by bottle for almost 24 hours. I hope that this means that she is starting to get it. They both gained weight again. Leah now weighs 4 lb 14 oz and Jack weighs 5 lb. Jason and I also got to help with baths last night. Jack hates getting a bath and screamed the whole time..Leah didn’t love it but wasn’t as mad as Jack.

Leaving today was bittersweet. On the one hand I am thrilled to finally get Jack home and start taking care of him full-time. On the other hand I never thought we would be leaving without Leah.  Hopefully they won’t be separated for too long.

Here are some new pictures.
